At Aston on Trent Primary School, Mathematics is an interconnected subject, an essential tool for everyday life, which gives our children a foundation for understanding their world around them.
Maths teaches children how to make sense of the world through developing the ability to calculate, reason and solve problems in a positive, fun and interactive way. It enables children to make connections and see relationships and pattern in both number and space in their everyday lives. We aim for our children to recognise themselves as 'Mathematicians', and to succeed and develop their skills as they journey through school.
Our curriculum aims to ensure that all our pupils:
At Aston, we believe that with enough time and practice, each and every child can be successful at mastering the mathematics programmes of study covered by the National Curriculum. Maths lessons are taught daily and each topic is covered over a block of weeks. The emphasis is on deepening children’s understanding in key skills before moving on. Manipulative resources are available for children to use to give them practical experience to back up their understanding. Vocabulary and reasoning are key concepts that allow children to explain their thinking in a variety of different ways.
In either paper form or online, Times Tables Rock Stars is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice.
