Music

Music at Aston

At Aston on Trent Primary School, our Music curriculum aims to develop creativity and inspire pupils to develop a love of music which will last them a lifetime.

During the Early Years and KS1, pupils are taught to express themselves using their voices through chants, songs and rhymes as well as play tuned and untuned instruments.

In Years 4 and 5, pupils are taught by specialist music teacher Mr Miller, from Derbyshire Music Partnership. They learn to play either a violin or cello and are supplied with an instrument to use both at home and in school. Year 4 and 5 have the opportunity to demonstrate all they have learned by playing alongside the prestigious Halle orchestra.

In Years 3 and 6, pupils are taught by specialist music teacher Miss Harding.

All pupils in KS2 are taught to improvise and compose music for a range of purposes linked to the inter-related musical dimensions: rhythm, pitch, dynamics, structure, silence, timbre and tempo. Pupils learn how to understand staff notation, as well as other forms of musical notation. They also learn to appreciate music from different traditions, eras, composers and musicians.

Peripatetic music lessons are also offered to all children, including SEN and vulnerable groups, to develop their musical talents.
